The supply of pork meat in the Cypriot market at this period is being overwhelmed by the demand. Cypriots eat pork more than once per week in form of souvlakia, souvla, pork chops etc; because of the tourist high season the demand increased even more and it appears that the supply just isn’t enough. According to Politis newspaper the production of pork is currently lower than normal after closing of 7 pig farms and the sub-optimal production from others. In the meantime the amount of frozen pork imported the past few months has increased to meet the demand.
A very interesting fact is that the consumption of meat In Cyprus is 105kg per person per year on average, which breaks down to each person consuming around 300g of meat per day.
